STEVE SPACEK SONGLIFE

Inspired by the early rave scene in the UK, South London's Steve Spacek has been making music ever since, under the many aliases from Stex, to Spacec, to Black Pocket, with various talents including Soulquarians, J Dilla and Thundercat. Houses is his new album that explores minimal house in all its stimulating forms - from soulful tracks like 'Where We Go', to broken beats on 'Higher Place'. 'Songlife' is a track that builds on a basic 4/4 template, allowing the song to build and expand into a flirty piece of dance music. It starts off with a thumping bass drum and ethereal synth pad. The chimes mark the start of the repeated hi-hat pattern and a funky mumbled bass. Intermittent claps and brass parts are unexpected and intriguing, giving the track an exciting edge that makes you want to move you feet. Blast this loud in the morning with a cup of tea, and you're off to a great start. The new album Houses is out now on bandcamp, and will be more widely available on 7th February. But for now you can enjoy this banging single to get you going. -Ellie Rose-Davies
